Ogemaw Falls

Located just outside of Alberta, Michigan, Ogemaw Falls is a short hike from the road and makes for a perfect spot to stop on your way to or from the Keweenaw Peninsula. The hardest part of reaching the falls is parking. Most likely, you’ll be the only ones at the falls. However, there’s no parking area. Coming from US-41, you’ll come to a small pond on the left where Ogemaw Creek is dammed. Park safely near there, and follow the north side (side closer to the way you came from US-41). There’s a make-shift trail, and the falls are only a minute or two away.

The trail is fairly rugged but manageable. In the springtime, the water level is higher, and the falls flow more triumphantly. However, depending on when you arrive in the spring, the bugs are quite awful. I don’t typically wear a head net, but I did here to escape their constant attacks.

The main falls are very quaint, and the river spits shortly after, one half falling through a narrow slice in the rock and the other sliding around a bend to the valley below. There are plenty of places to sit down on the rocks and enjoy the view and sounds of the water flowing past you.

Ogemaw Falls is close to Canyon Falls Roadside Park, which is admittedly more triumphant, but you’ll find far fewer people here. If you’ve got time, hit both! For a more relaxed visit, Ogenaw Falls is the place to be.
