The Emergency Ark (Celestial Ship of the North)

Detroit artist Scott Hocking has been creating unique sculptures and art installations since the 1990s. Most of his work can be found in Detroit, often using abandoned buildings, leftover boats, and large areas of open land as his canvas, but he sometimes ventures outside of the city to work on projects. The Emergency Ark, also known as the Celestial Ship of the North, was completed by Hocking in 2015. It was constructed using plank wood from an old crumbling barn, creating an ark reminiscent of the story of Noah in the bible. It is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, located 10 miles southwest of Port Austin, 10 miles east of Caseville, and almost 25 miles west of Port Hope on the side of active farmland. Although the ark is technically on private property, the view from the legal right away is quite cool, and you can see it from a ways away. When we visited the thumb for a camping trip this was our first stop on the way to Port Crescent State Park, and I bet one of Kira’s kids that we would find Noah’s Ark on the camping trip. They still haven’t paid up!
