Quarry View Roadside Park

The Calcite Quarry has been operating since 1912 and has employed generations of men and women from Rogers City. The quarry is a vital part of the town’s economy. Rightfully so, folks around town are quite proud of it being the largest limestone quarry in the world. Limestone is essential in the steel manufacturing process, and US Steel, the one time largest steel producer and largest corporation in the world, owned the quarry for decades. Today, you can view the quarry from a little parking area off the US-23 Business Loop with a viewing platform and a panoramic view of the quarry operation. From the platform, you can see trucks flying around the Grand Canyon-esque landscape, carrying thousands of pounds of limestone like Tonka trucks in a sandbox. We visited the roadside park in the evening once, and the view of the quarry was not so great as it was not illuminated, but the vast dark space made the parking lot a great place to take photographs of the stars. Quarry View Roadside Park is a quick stop off the main drag in Rogers City, and after you go, you can say you have been to the largest limestone quarry in the world!
