Nara Nature Trail Boardwalk

Bob and Ruth Nara donated 100 acres of land on the southeast side of Houghton to become a park that now houses the Nara Nature Trail Boardwalk. The trail runs on both sides of the Pilgrim River, offering views of the wetland that connects with the Keweenaw Waterway.

In June of 2018, a heavy storm hit Houghton with rain totaling over 7 inches. This storm destroyed the former Nara Nature Trail Boardwalk, and the cleanup took months to complete. Late in 2020, the new boardwalk was completed. It offers better accessibility options, so more people can enjoy the nature of the path.

We visited on a rainy day and were blown away by the beauty of the surrounding ecosystem. It was incredibly still, but life was present at every turn. Even for a short walk, it’s well worth a stop if you’re passing through Houghton!
