Kyte Monroe Skatepark

Kyte Monroe Park in St. Clair Shores features a playground, picnic areas, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, basketball courts, batting cages, soccer fields, and a skatepark. In the early 1960s, the park was named after Kyte Monroe, a local kid turned little league coach who won multiple youth championships as a coach. Kyte enrolled at Michigan State University to become a school teacher, a move that made sense to anyone who knew him. He was killed in November of 1961 in a car accident on I-94 just shy of his 19th birthday. The next summer, the park was dedicated in his honor and still bears his name to this day. One of the newest and most popular additions to the park is the skatepark, which completed its first phase in 2018. The park is not huge but features a few rails and ramps that are in constant use by local skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter kids. The park is in close proximity to a number of different suburbs on the east side of Detroit and is open at the same time as the rest of the park, offering new opportunities for brothers and sisters who are forced to come to baseball, soccer, and basketball practices at the park. Just like most skateparks, Kyte Monroe is more popular in the afternoon. Get there early, or be prepared to share the park!
